Home Sweet Home - Socially Distant Livecast from the RamKat, Winston-Salem NC 09/07/2020
When all of the music venues were shut down in 2020 due to COVID, the RamKat in Winston-Salem invited a number of local artists to come in and play to an empty room. I was told that I was invited because of my vast experience at playing to empty rooms. These shows were filmed with multiple cameras and then broadcast on YouTube and Facebook.

Once a year (usually) White Cross/ Chapel Hill/Orange County based guitarist/band leader/cat herder Lance White invites a bunch of NC based musicians to gather together to perform a tribute show for charity.
We each pick a song, work up an arrangement, run through it ONE TIME with the backing band in practice, and then go perform that song in front of a live audience. No pressure there. None at all. We have done tributes to Merle Haggard, Chuck Berry, John Prine, Charlie Watts/Rolling Stones, and a couple of One-Hit Wonder shows.
It’s a good time. The hang is as good as the show as most of us are too busy gigging to get the opportunity to see our friends play.
This was the close-out of the 2019 One-Hit Wonder show held at the Cats Cradle Back Room in Chapel Hill/Carrboro NC on 08/13/23. It’s a reggae/bluegrass version of the great Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love”. (with a little Rick Roll at 2:30)
It kind of freaked me out to see how much larger I am than these people. I was afraid of accidentally squishing one of them.
I love playing House Concerts. People come to specifically listen to your songs and stories. I love to play music, but I also love to tell people about where these songs that I have written came from. The shows where I have felt a connection to both the artist and their music, are the ones where the entertainer would tell stories between songs. Todd Snider, Scott Miller, Fred Eaglesmith, John Prine, Loudon Wainwright III, Steve Young, and David Olney are all people who are/were masters of this. I have found that the more I try to personally interact with the audience, the more engaged and invested they become.
Marilyn and Bill Duncan invited me into their home in Jonesborough TN to play a show for their friends. Marilyn is a fine picker and singer and we stayed up late the night prior swapping songs. I was fed a couple of amazing meals, and participated is a number of some extremely interesting and enjoyable conversations. Then I got to perform for them and their friends. It was a great weekend. Bill was kind enough to record most of the performance.

Trio Work
Occasionally I will be asked to put together a duo or trio. I can do that, but it’s going to cost you more money because I normally do an even split. So if you are paying me $300 for a 3hr show and I invite someone to come sit in, that comes out to $150 each for 3 hours. If it’s a trio, that breaks down to $100 each. That will barely cover gas, food, guitar strings, and all of the other overhead, so I’m going to have to ask you for more money.
Here’s a video from a show I did with the Great David Childers and David Niblock. I should have billed it Two Davids and a Dork.
